Dunkin' Donuts has been serving donuts and coffee for over 65 years, becoming a New England and international staple along the way. While Dunkin' has since expanded its menu to include sandwiches and shakes, the chain's donuts will always prevail.
Technically speaking, Dunkin' has 22 classic donut flavors, not including limited editions or seasonal selections, of which there are dozens. To stay true to our roots, we've tried all the classic flavors and ranked them.
The evaluation criteria are the following:
Texture: Too light or too heavy? Too creamy or cakey? Too dry or too sticky?
Accuracy: How does the flavor match the description? For example, does Strawberry Frosted taste like strawberries?
Overall taste: is it good? It is bad? How good is it? How bad is it?
Taking these three factors into account, six judges rated the donuts with scores from 0.1 to 5.0. The scores were then calculated to produce a ranking.
Without further ado, here's how Dunkin' Classic flavors rank, from worst to best:
22. Bavarian Church – 1.12
A powdered donut with a cream filling sounds delicious, but our tasters found the Bavarian Kremes too sweet and heavy. Though our testers didn't like it, this is a polarizing putty—you either love it or hate it.
21. Cinnamon – 1.17
A few chews and the cake mixes with the cinnamon to create a paste-like consistency, probably due to the dry mouthfeel cinnamon usually produces. Coffee or another drink is essential when eating this donut.
20. Torrado Coconut – 1.67
Some people really like the taste of coconut. A lot of people really don't like that. With that being said, this donut strikes a nice balance between coconut flavor and overall sweetness. But unless you're the type who's more excited about a Mounds bar on Halloween, you'll probably opt for a different donut instead.
19. Jelly Bar – 1.73
How stick shape affected rating varied from flavor to flavor. For jelly, the bar fared inferior in the taste test, though it did have a respectable jelly-to-donut ratio. The real scratch though was the taste of the jam. Some testers thought it tasted like a raspberry, while others thought it tasted like a strawberry.
18. Powdered sugar – 1.75
While the powdered sugar donut is lighter than it sounds, it's actually quite sweet and, like the cinnamon option, quite dry. If you can ignore the slight mess, it's a classic flavor that adds something extra to the classic cake donut.
17. Old-fashioned cake – 1.97
Maybe it's a bit boring, but sometimes there's no need to mess with something so tried and true. The Old Fashioned is a good choice for dipping, and its straightforward approach allows the simple buttery flavors to shine. And no, this one doesn't taste like whiskey.
16. Iced Vanilla with Granules – 2.02
One of many frosted flavors, this one comes with rainbow sprinkles, but the frosting just makes the already very sweet vanilla frosting even sweeter. The vanilla flavor doesn't taste very natural either. It's like a bad experience with cupcakes.
15. Palo original – 2.35
Probably the best option for grinding coffee, Original Stick works best as a vehicle for other flavors like coffee or even peanut butter or Nutella. Alone, it can be a bit dry and maybe not sweet enough. It's like an English cake, but less buttery and tasty.
14. Crema Boston – 2.40
The Massachusetts state donut is flying off the shelves and, like the Bavarian Kreme, its filling makes it a cult favorite. Those who don't like cream don't do very well, but those who do know the true power of cream combined with chocolate frosting.
13. Blueberry Topping – 2.45
Blueberry Glazed is basically a sweeter version of a blueberry muffin, but with smaller donut-shaped blueberries. The flavor is similar to its cousin, the Blueberry Cake donut, but a little too generous with the sugar.
12. Jalea – 2.52
Jelly Donuts are a mess, unless you're not a fan of jelly, in which case they're just a mess. However, the donut adds a nice balance, letting the fruity flavor of the jam work. And even if you're not a fan of fruity sweets, the sticky center is just sugary enough to mask whatever fruit flavor it really should be.
11. Butternut – 2,65
The Butternut donut is a bit of a mystery. The topping is actually a mixture of coconut, cornmeal, and sugar, but it tastes very different from the coconut donut. It's not too crunchy, it tastes like Almond Joy and offers a different texture that is sure to bring crumbs.
10. Doble Chocolate – 2.70
Chocolate lovers will love this one, but many will find it a bit too rich to eat first thing in the morning. The cake and frosting provide two flavors of chocolate, which is surprisingly tasty but also quite heavy.
9. Chocolate coating – 2.82
Chocolate Glazed is a quintessential flavor, and while most tasters will remember that it was a bit more glazed back in the day, it's still a signature putty. It's not too heavy, but it also has a distinctive flavor that isn't exactly chocolatey, a bit like Cocoa Puffs.
8. Strawberry Coverage with Granules – 3.18
The strawberry flavor is very different but also very good. It's creamy, almost like strawberry milk, and it goes really well with the texture of the donut it sits on. Sure, it tastes extremely artificial, but if you can accept that, you've got yourself a nice colorful treat.
7. Blueberry Pie – 3.20
Like the donut with blueberry frosting, blueberry pie also tastes like a store-bought muffin, but it loses much of the added sweetness in its favor. It's probably a better choice if you're looking for a more realistic blueberry flavor than Blueberry Glazed.
6. Maple Frosted com Granulado – 3.22
Maple Frosted was the most pleasant surprise in the package, with its pleasantly creamy maple flavor that isn't too overbearing. Some tasters even found hints of coffee flavor. Overall, it's a good breakfast donut, somewhat reminiscent of a pancake or waffle.
5. French Cruller – 3.37
Despite popular belief, the French Cruller tastes quite different from the glazed donut. In fact, its softness makes this donut taste fried, just like a donut should. Some testers thought it was almost too hollow. The lightness gives it a slightly dry consistency that the French may not approve of.
4. Enamelled Stick – 3.43
The Glazed Stick presents another solid dipping option, but with a little added sweetness. Many testers noted a distinctive nutmeg flavor not found in the glazed donut, which is likely the addition of an artificial sweetener called vanillin.
3. Vitrified Chocolate Stick – 3.58
In theory, the chocolate glazed stick shouldn't taste any different than the chocolate glazed donut, but tasters unanimously recommended the stick. Not only is it advantageous for soaking, but it also has a crunchier texture, which makes all the difference.
2. Enamelled – 4.17
The glazed donut is so effective because of its chewy texture. The taste is not too aggressive, but the sweetness makes it melt in the mouth. This one may not have all the bells and whistles, but it's classic for a reason.
1. Chocolate coating – 4.24
What's the one thing that can make a glazed donut better? Just a light touch of chocolate. The Chocolate Frosted takes the crown because it is the perfect balance between puff pastry and a more pronounced chocolate coating. It's safe to say that Dunkin' reduces this to an art.
